The next Bitcoin meetup in Phnom Penh will take place on Thursday, May 25, start from 6:30 pm, at Show Box. Meet other Bitcoin people, say hello, ask questions, make connections and discuss projects. It is free, and everyone is welcome.
These are exciting times for Bitcoin. 1 BTC is worth over $2000 at the date of writing and has doubled in value since January. If you want to learn more about this new technology, you should come to the meetup. In case you cannot make it or want to learn more right now; here’s a quick Q&A of the three most frequently asked questions.
How do I get rich quick with Bitcoin?
You do not. Bitcoin is a grand experiment, new technology, and a decentralized, cryptographic currency. It is not magic. There are no guarantees. But there are lots of scams out there. Don’t send BTC to incredible investment schemes. You will lose your money. If you wish to buy bitcoin; start with a small amount, something you can afford to lose, and store it in a safe wallet.
What about altcoins like ETH or DASH?
Bitcoin can be ugly and chaotic at times. There’s no leader. Discussions about its future are fought out in public places like Reddit. However, it has been here for about eight years now. Every ten minutes, a new block is added to the Bitcoin blockchain, and Bitcoin gets stronger and more secure. No altcoin even comes close to Bitcoin regarding security, user-base, and robustness. In our opinion, altcoins are mostly designed to lure in people who feel they missed out on bitcoin and dream to get rich quick. Altcoins currently have no real use-cases besides speculation. Things might end badly if you try to speculate on an altcoin without a serious knowledge and/ or connections with developers or stakeholders. Be careful.
Where can I learn more?
We have a lot of free resources here at MekongMonkey. Andreas M. Antonopoulos has a YouTube channel with excellent videos. He has also written the best book about the technical aspects of Bitcoin. Another good read is Digital Gold, by Nathaniel Popper, about the early days of bitcoin. Or you can go on an adventure and do a Google search. And, of course, there’s the meetup on Thursday…
